Commitment to Diversity

Faegre & Benson defines diversity broadly to include all the different life experiences that we find in our workforce and among our clients and communities: age, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, economic background, and many other characteristics.

Our goals are to increase the diversity of our workforce and to provide an inclusive environment where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. We have placed a particular focus on increasing our representation of women, people of different races and ethnicities, and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender (GLBT) individuals. We aim not just to recruit a diverse team, but also to support their efforts to advance their careers and fulfill their leadership potential.

We are proud that third-party organizations have honored our progress to date. The Minority Corporate Counsel Association named us the winner of the Thomas Sager Award for the Midwest Region for our efforts to promote diversity. Career consultants VAULT named us among the top 10 law firms in the nation for women, and we placed second on Diversity and the Bar magazine's list of Leading Law Firms for Women Equity Partners. The Women's Vision Foundation named us Corporate Advocate of the Year in Colorado, in recognition of our efforts to provide leadership opportunities for women. The Human Rights Campaign awarded Faegre & Benson a perfect score of 100 percent on its Corporate Equality Index, which measures how U.S. companies treat their gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and clients.

We participate in initiatives to bring diversity to our communities. We were a founding member of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice, which is an association of law firms and corporate legal departments that share a mission of attracting, recruiting, advancing and retaining attorneys of color in the Twin Cities legal community. We also offer diversity scholarships to two law students annually. The recipients of the scholarships work as summer associates in one of our four U.S. offices between their first and second years of law school.

We strive to incorporate our diversity efforts into the daily practice of the firm. A member of our management committee serves as diversity partner to provide top-level accountability for the results of our diversity efforts. Our diversity committee directs our firm-wide diversity programs and works collaboratively to assure that our policies, events, and ways of doing business reflect our values and commitment. Our fulltime diversity manager and diversity coordinators in Minneapolis and Colorado provide staff support in all these efforts.

We focus on results, not just good intentions. While we believe we have come a long way in creating a culture of diversity, we know that there is much work to be done not only in building a diverse workforce, but also in helping diverse individuals achieve their potential within the firm.
