New Lawyers: Professional Development

The most important training you will receive is the informal daily guidance and advice from the outstanding senior lawyers with whom you'll work. We also offer a wide range of other resources to help you develop your skills as a practicing attorney.

When you join the firm, you'll participate in a week-long orientation program presented by firm leadership. In addition to covering basic issues such as benefits and technology, we hold panel discussions and lunch meetings covering a wide range of topics, such as working with support staff and effective lawyering.

We provide an extensive formal Training Program for all associates, which begins in the fall and continues through the winter months. Sessions are designed and taught by our partners and senior associates and are highly interactive. The program covers topics relating to specific practice areas and substantive areas of law, such as taking depositions, drafting, and negotiating. Your group will also send you to continuing legal education courses relating to your practice.

Our Deposition Training Program is designed for junior litigation associates who wish to develop or strengthen their methods in taking and defending depositions. We work with NITA to offer our associates on-site Deposition skills training. The program includes a combination of lecture sessions, demonstrations and hands-on workshops. The workshops place associates in practical deposition situations and allow them to expand their skills through experience. During these workshops, the group of associates is broken down into small teams to allow for one-on-one interaction.

We also bring in speakers to provide on-site training in areas of legal writing and continuing legal education. For example, we offer legal writing seminars taught by Bryan Garner for litigation and transactional lawyers. We also offer opportunities to obtain continuing legal education ethics credits at on-site seminars.

Each practice group holds periodic meetings during the year to discuss legal developments in the practice area, as well as client development opportunities. These meetings are generally open to all lawyers practicing or interested in the practice, from senior partners to junior associates. In addition, each practice area subscribes to a variety of periodicals and online resources to help lawyers learn about the latest developments in their practice areas. Participation in practice group meetings often affords junior associates an opportunity to collaborate with other lawyers on research, writing, speaking and client development projects.

We encourage our lawyers to take an active role in trade and professional organizations that help them build valuable relationships in the business and legal communities. Our lawyers contribute regularly to trade publications and law journals, address national and international business and legal conferences, and are known widely as leaders in the profession. We actively support lawyers in these professional development initiatives, and we reward their efforts as part of the ten factors we use to evaluate performance.
