Experience

Matt Thompson counsels a diverse clientele in the investment management and financial services industries.  He organized Faegre & Benson's investment management practice in 1995 and served as the leader of the practice from its inception through 2009.

Matt assists and counsels hedge fund managers, venture capitalists, private equity firms and other investment managers regarding the formation, organization, structuring, syndication and ongoing compliance requirements of private investment funds and related management organizations, and with other products and services and related strategic issues (for example, management contracts, marketing arrangements, strategic partnerships, vendor contracts, and mergers and acquisitions).

His practice encompasses a variety of investment products and services, including hedge funds (both domestic and offshore), private equity and venture capital funds, myriad hybrid structures and individually managed accounts. He also regularly represents institutional investors and their advisers in their review of prospective investments and related issues.

Matt has participated in the organization and ongoing counseling of numerous mutual funds and in structuring many investment company mergers and acquisitions. His practice also includes serving as independent legal counsel to mutual fund boards.

Commencing his legal career in 1985 with Dorsey & Whitney, Matt was promoted to partner on January 1, 1993. He joined Faegre & Benson as a partner in 1995. From 1994 to 1995, Matt served as vice president and fund counsel of Inter-Regional Financial Group (now RBC Wealth Management). Prior to law school, Matt spent over three years in the audit department of Laventhol & Horwath, a national certified public accounting firm.
